THE MEMORY OF THE FOREST

01SCARCITY
Tradition tells of a community facing severe food scarcity. In the face of hunger, cacique Itaki is said to have made an extreme decision: newborn children would be sacrificed to prevent the population from growing.
02IAÇÁ
Among the children condemned was Iaçá’s daughter, the cacique’s own granddaughter. Devastated by the loss, Iaçá prayed to Tupã for another way to feed the people without sacrificing children.
03THE NIGHT
On a moonlit night, Iaçá heard a child crying. Outside her hut, she saw her daughter beside a palm tree. She ran to embrace her — but the child disappeared.
04THE DISCOVERY
The next morning, Iaçá was found beside the palm, looking up at small dark fruits. The cacique ordered them gathered. The story says the fruit became a source of food for the community and the sacrifice order was lifted.
THE TRANSFORMATION
In honour of Iaçá, popular tradition links the fruit’s name “açaí” to “Iaçá” written backwards in this version of the story.
